conversion

Hello everyone... I am sure this is on here somewhere but I am new to forums and new to engine work too BUT while saying that I am looking to try and do an engine conversion on my '98 VW T4 Transporter. I have been advised on engines to look for (being 1z seat, golf, passat or an AHU Tdi) so I am looking for the best vehicle to get one of these engines from as some people have said Skoda but some people say not Skoda?? Also and probably the most important things I need to know please would be...

What do I actually need to have to make this a complete success on conversion? All I have heard about is wiring loom needs to be changed but that is it? Any specialist tools needed before I start this then have to leave it in pieces in the street to then go and get before carrying on? And could I use the gearbox off the donor vehicle too? Or is it a case of using the T4 gearbox?

What year engine also, that could be very important as I have seen some 1z engines built after my van, does that matter too much?

I am also wondering if an ANU engine would fit and if so what needs to be changed? As I found a nice mk3 golf but with ANU lump in it...
