Just in case any of you lot are sober or feel the need to escape by tuesday..I know its a bugger of a long way to drive for an afternoon out,& the pub in imber (The Bell)has been dry since 1943,but its an interesting jaunt that you cant easily partake of all year round,& its a bastard to find without someone who knows the way!
Following the success of last years visit to Imber,Here it is again, with a couple of minor refinements
Tuesday,27th December.
Meeting on top of the white horse at Westbury BA13 3EE (this gets you to "Newtown" ..Just continue up the hill & turn left at the top, which will take you to the car park)
Meet from 12noon,leaving start point at 1pm,Diverting into the centre of Westbury for a loo stop if needed, then cruising over towards Imber..A quick stop in Lavington to re-group & allow traffic to get past us,then onwards to Imber. At the end of the afternoon... its suggested that you leave the Village via the Warminster road & that we re-convene at the Little Chef at Warminster services,Where they serve a decent coffee,Amazing Hot chocolate,& quite edible food to warm you up after a cold afternoon!
The Church in Imber Will be open & the exhibition will be on display
For those of you who dont know the history of imber, the potted version is...November 1943,the US army were looking for a village to use for training purposes in anticipation of the liberation of europe,so the war department arrived in imber village, and basically told the residents that they had a month to pack up & leave the village, that they'd be compensated for their food crops, but not for loss of property,as they were only "borrowing"the Village!!
On the day that the US army moved out of imber, the British army moved in!
the residents never got any compensation for the loss of their homes.
The village is only accessable on a very limited number of days per year & doesnt appear on many maps! There are several events in the village over the christmas period, incuding a "peace vigil" on New years eve.
