Performance engine questions!

I know a bit about engines, but im really after opinions of peoples who have more experience than me with certain upgrade bits n bobs.

i was going to go down the turbo route, but im basically lazy and know il never follow it through.

for the same reason i cant be arsed to go bigger than 1641 either

im currently running a 1600 recon so its a decent engine to start with, compressions great and once warmed up it runs really well.

Im going to be putting either a single dual carb, or twin dual carbs on it in the next couple of months, along with a 1500 gearbox.


So the questions are...

1) is it worth the cost/hassle of putting 5cc extra onto each barrel between 1600 and 1641? will i really notice the difference?

2) whats the best external oil cooler to go for that doesnt cost the earth? its just going to be a quick road car so i wont need anything special

3) does anyone have opinions on carbs to use? il be looking to spend £400ish depending one whats available. are the empis worth looking at or is it better going for webers? as ive said before i just want a bit of poke, not guna take it down the strip!

4) and finally without splitting the case, is there any other mods i can do to squeeze a bit more power out of it, or make it more reliable with the extra power im already going to see? e.g. rockers/valves etc.

Ive got a 1641 in the bus and its pretty quick.
Mines been fitted with a 110 engle cam and twin kadron 40's.
Its got some good torque midrange in a van,so it would be good in a bug.

Dickies running pretty much the same setup as me then, but was a bit juicy with the kads, it runs a single weber now, it aint super speedy, just the long cogbox makes the difference i think. And other than a well setup engine i dunno why its so rapid.
id sell that 1776 in the workshop for not much more than your gonna spend on carbs tho! Think about that shit holmes lol...hmmmmmmmmmm

u at work on weds georgio? is it cool to come and have a chat with u about all this shiz? not got a huge amount but a big enough amount of money coming to get this done so really need to get my head around some stuff on where is the best place to spend the cash!

dickie, what did u have before the 1641? is it worth upgrading from 1600 to 1641??

also someone today said to me about skimming the head to change the compression?what does that acheive as it seems like a cheap mod?

You port the heads to match the manifolds,that will help the fuel/air mix get through quicker..
Mines been in the van since ive had it,so cant say what difference there would be.
I managed 20.19 at the pod once which aint bad for a bus with a 1641.
A decent merged header exhaust will give you a few more bhp over a normal 4-into-1

can you run a single carb with a merged header? lookin at pics theres no preheat thingymabobs
