polo people - does a 97 have the same engine as a 2000 ?

iv seen under the bonnet of a couple and the later ones have a plate with 1.4 bla bla on them it seems but the 97 is just a plane ugly thing , are the difrent engines and is the later one any better ? is it worth worrying about .

the 97 is a mk4 and has a nice alloy rocker cover. having said that, im pretty sure the engines are the same, poss different injection and ignition systems though.
