Golf mk 3 speedo problems

MK 3 TDI,

Speedo died. Small amount of smoke and burning smell from behind dash.
Question is, whats broken? Instrument cluster? Sensor?
Is the sensor that goes to speedo the same as the one to the revs?
Rev counter works fine.

if any good ive got a dash i think 125,000 miles from a m reg mk3 golf
